Gangaikondacholapuram Temple is located in Ariyalur District close Thanjavur city of Tamil Nadu and known for its structural and building wonder. The Presiding Deity is known as Brihadeeswara. His Consort here is known as Periyanayaki. Gangaikonda Cholapuram was founded by King Rajendra Chola. He made this as the Chola Capital and it went on to serve as a Capital for the next 250 years. The Shivalingam here is one of the Biggest in South India. This Temple of Lord Siva at Gangaikondacholapuram additionally has one of the biggest statue of Nandi in whole Southern India. This Nandhi is placed and sculpted in such a way that it reflects the sunlight on it to the Sanctum. The wonderful design of the temple boasts of a 9 storey vimanam that reaches out to the stature of 185 feet. Confronting the east heading, Gangai Konda Cholapuram grasps mind blowing models and carvings. Though different version exists inscriptions of this Temple tell us that the Temple was built in the 1035 AD. The Sculptural engineering are much superior when compared to those of other similar Temples. The entire Temple was constructed by King Rajendra Chola on an elevated structure. Amazing figures decorate the dividers and roofs of Gangaikondacholapuram. The imagination of artists is reflected in the figures of dancing Nataraja and a quiet Saraswati. Nonetheless, the models raised here are as imaginative as found in some other temples of Cholas. The most fascinating are of Shiva-Parvati, Ardhanareshwar (the man-lady appearance of Lord Shiva) and Ganesha. The epic holy place additionally addresses a few critical bronzes of the Chola age. There is a tunnel from this Temple which leads us to the nearby Royal Palace which existed then. Chola Kings were great Patrons of Art and Architechture and hence Rajendra Chola like his father King Raja Raja Chola evinced keen interests in this Temple. The Temple has been rocognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Sri Vaidyanathaswamy Temple or Vajrathampanatha Temple is located inbetween Ariyalur and Thiruvaiyaru in Thirumazhapadi. The Presiding Deity is known as Vaidyanathaswamy or Vajrathampanatha Swamy, who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is a Swayambumurthy here. His Consorts here are Sundrambigai and Balambigai. Both of them have separate Shrines withiin the Temple. Saint Sundarar has sung in Praise of this Temple. The Temple was built between 1000-2000 years ago on the Banks of River Kollidam which is a tributary to River Cauvery. The Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and the Maratha Rulers had a big hand in the development of this Temple. The East facing Rajagopuram is seven tiered and the other Gopuram is five tiered. The Temple attaches great importance to Lord Nandhi, the Sacred Bull. It is believed that Nandhi got wedded here. Nandhi assumes a human form here and has a Shrines in the name of Nandhiamperumal. The four Nandhis found here are said to represent the four Vedas. There is an exclusive Shrine for Sri Jura Haraharar. It is believed that those who offer hot boiled rice with hot rasam as an offering to the God would be rid of their fever with high temperature. There is an enclosure for the 63 Nayanmars. The Car / Chariot festival draws several Devotees from far and near.
